Founder and Principal
Founder and Principal, Lapedra (LP) Tolson received a B.A. in Broadcast Productions from North Carolina A&T State University. After completing her undergraduate degree, she enlisted in the United States Air Force. She served as a combat photographer, completing a tour in Iraq and garnered many awards for her striking imagery and exceptional airmanship.
After separating from the military, she entered the federal workspace in Washington D.C. and began a career in design. During that time, she studied at the University of Baltimore, where she earned an M.A. in Publications Design. Looking for a change of pace, she moved to England and earned a second M.A. in Filmmaking from Kingston University in Kingston Upon Thames, England. After returning to Washington D.C., Lapedra continued building her career, working as a designer and researcher as a Federal employee and government contractor at DHS Intelligence & Analysis, The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board (tsp.gov), and Agile Six Applications, Inc.
In 2020, she combined her education and unique background and created Friends From The City, a digital design and tech agency unlike any currently within the civic tech space.
Lapedra has earned a variety of recognition for her work throughout her career. In addition, she’s a music lover and self-proclaimed foodie who enjoys traveling the world to experience other cultures through their cuisine.
Tamara B. Tolson is a native of Denver, Colorado. She moved to Washington D.C. to pursue a law enforcement career. She served four years as a police officer, earning commendations from the Chief of Police for Bravery and Excellent Police Duty. She relocated to Atlanta, GA, to complete her undergraduate education, earning a B.A. in Communications and Psychology from the distinguished Oglethorpe University.
After completing her undergraduate degree, she returned to Washington D.C. and began a career in Corporate Communications. She worked for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) as a Communications Specialist. She and Lapedra then decided to move overseas for a change of pace. To maximize her time abroad, she enrolled in a graduate program at Kingston University. Between traveling to 9 countries, she completed her studies and graduated with distinction (English honors), earning an M.A. in Creative Writing.
She returned to Washington D.C. and continued her Communications Career at AARP Headquarters. After leaving AARP, Tamara worked as a Federal Contract Proposal Writer and a Federal Employee at the United States Postal Service Headquarters as a Brand Marketing Copywriter.
In 2019 Tamara and Lapedra left Washington D.C. and followed their long-time dream of living in New York City. Tamara enjoys watching foreign horror films, traveling, and writing in her spare time. She recently completed her first fiction novel.
